• By late March 2020, tightening media controls in China over COVID-19 coverage led co-directors Weixi Chen and the anonymous filmmaker to stop collaborating with director Hao Wu. Wu edited their footage while quarantined in Atlanta after a U.S. network dropped the project he had been developing.
• Co-directors Weixi Chen and the anonymous filmmaker wore personal protective equipment every day while filming, which was uncomfortable, hard to breathe in and sometimes made them feel sick. Inside contamination zones they stayed for hours with no bathroom breaks, then disinfected and slept alone in hotels reserved for front-line workers.
• During Wuhan's lockdown, hospital access was limited to patients, medical staff and reporters, and the hardest-hit hospitals admitted only crews vetted by the authorities. Early on, amid a severe shortage of medical supplies, many hospitals welcomed media coverage to help them look for help.
• 76 Days won a 2021 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking, the first Emmy win for the Pluto TV network, which aired the film in late 2020.
