Plot summary

The Jesuit maxim says that a child's first seven years decide the adult he becomes, and in 1964 a British television documentary put the claim to a test, interviewing seven-year-olds from different parts of England about their lives and their hopes. The same group has been filmed at intervals of seven years ever since, through ages fourteen, twenty-one, twenty-eight, thirty-five and forty-two. Now they are forty-nine, and twelve of the original children sit down with the cameras again. They speak about marriage, children and grandchildren, work, class and prejudice, and about the program itself, which several of them question. Old footage runs alongside the new conversations. Simon talks about responsibility, John about his charity work, Neil about politics, and Jackie about the intrusiveness of the filming.
