Plot summary
Levi Savage, who once served in the Mormon Battalion and as a missionary in Asia, agrees to assist the Willie Handcart Company on its 1856 journey to Salt Lake City. The start is late in the season, and the pioneers head across the Midwestern plains unprepared for the bitter winter that comes on. Elizabeth Panting, a convert to the Latter-day Saints faith, flees her drunken husband and joins the handcart company with her two little children. Illness, wolves and freezing river crossings follow the travelers, and miracles are reported along the journey. Nine-year-old Agnes Caldwell wears out her shoes near the Continental Divide and wraps her feet in cloth for much of the walk, and she and another girl jump over rattlesnakes on the trail.
