Plot summary
The documentary goes back to April 13, 1970, when Apollo 13 was 180,000 miles from Earth and a malfunction left the spacecraft leaking oxygen. Three astronauts were on board, and Mission Control could not yet see a way to bring them home. The teams on the ground had to find ways to keep carbon dioxide from building up in the cabin, to manage a shortage of water, and to cope with the cold of deep space. The account draws on NASA footage and on interviews with Apollo space scientists, and it sets out the thirteen factors on which the effort to bring the crew home depended.
