Plot summary
Mehmet grows up an only child in a middle-class district of Istanbul. He is intelligent, but his taste for mischief has kept him from succeeding at anything. He knows he will fail the university entrance exam and dreads his parents' reaction, so he searches for a lie that will soften the news. Just before the results are announced, a letter arrives from the Spellcraft School of Magic and Wizardry. He cannot tell his parents that he has been offered a place at a school of wizardry, so he claims that a school abroad has accepted him. He keeps the truth about the letter to himself and leaves home for the school.
