Plot summary
In an unnamed, isolated small town in Hungary during winter, János Valuska carries the newspapers and conducts a performance with drunken patrons in a bar, acting out the eclipse of the sun until the animals fall silent and the warm light returns. He is devoted to his uncle György Eszter, a composer who records the compromise he hears in the musical scale and proposes a new tuning. At the post office the workers are unsettled by signs of a circus' arrival. That circus comes into town at night with a huge stuffed whale and a star performer called the Prince, who is never seen. György's estranged wife Tünde wants him to become chairman of the Clean Up the Town movement and gives him a list of names to recruit, with the police chief's blessing.
