Plot summary
Plum Village Monastery in France opens its life to cameras for the first time, and the documentary settles among the monks and nuns of the sangha, who have given up their possessions to practice mindfulness under the Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh. Filmed over three years in a vérité style, it observes their ceremonies, meditations and ordinary daily tasks, keeping the whole community at the center rather than one figure, in line with Thich Nhat Hanh's wish that the film not be about him. Voice over readings from his 1960s journals, Fragrant Palm Leaves, are woven in as meditations. A third of the budget came from crowdfunding.
