Plot summary
Vennela is born in Warangal district in 1973, in the middle of a cross-fire between police and Naxals. She grows up with her father's poetry, then becomes obsessed with the writings of a Naxal leader, Ravi Shankar, who publishes under the pen name Aranya. In 1992 the state police search her village, suspecting the villagers of sympathizing with the Naxals, and thrash her father when he objects. Vennela rebukes the police, and they harass her, until Ravi's troop arrives and ambushes them. Ravi promises the villagers they will be safe, and Vennela is impressed. She calls off her wedding with her cousin, telling him she loves Ravi, and leaves home the next day, writing to her parents asking them not to look for her.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Viraata Parvam (2022)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Sai Pallavi's character Vennela is based on Thumu Sarala, a 16-year-old from Warangal district who quit her studies in 1992 and joined the Peoples War Group to join the naxalites. Sarala was killed by the naxals a month later under mysterious circumstances.
- Gopichand was Venu Udugula's first choice for the lead in Virata Parvam before Rana Daggubati was finalised; Daggubati plays the Naxal leader Dr Ravi Shankar alias Comrade Ravanna and reduced his weight to look lean for the part.
- Tabu was initially cast in the film, but schedule conflicts led to her replacement by Nandita Das in August 2019. It marked Nandita Das' return to Telugu cinema after her last appearance in a Telugu film, Kamli (2006).
