Plot summary
Venu, a high schooler in the early 1970s, spends his time helping traveling plays that visit his hometown. A producer sends him to fetch Murali, an instrumentalist staying at the local landlord's house. Though drunk, Murali agrees to play and impresses Venu with his music. They become friends. Later, Venu attends college, and Murali arrives looking for a library book. The book is already with a first-year student named Annie, and Murali falls for her when they meet. He and Annie begin seeing each other. Around this time, Murali sends Venu word that he plans to leave for Madras and pursue a career in cinema. Venu decides to join him, and they rent a room in Kodambakkam. Murali works as a violinist, while Venu carries a script and seeks a producer.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Varshangalkku Shesham (2024)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Though Varshangalkku Shesham depicts Chennai in the 1970s and 1980s, art director Nimesh Thanur built sets replicating Kodambakkam and the Madras film studios at Aroor in Kerala, and it took two months to build them.
- Director Lokesh Kanagaraj turned down a role in the film: Vineeth Sreenivasan wanted a Tamil-speaking actor with a calm demeanour, but Kanagaraj had directing commitments, so Kalesh Ramanand, who had appeared in Hridayam, was cast instead.
- Vineeth Sreenivasan based Pranav Mohanlal's character on the actor Murali, whom he watched during the 1992 shoot of Champakulam Thachan walking to his hotel in a jubba and mundu, singing a poem; he named the character after him.
- Amrit Ramnath, the son of singer-composer Bombay Jayashri, made his feature-film composing debut with Varshangalkku Shesham, composing three tracks while at the hospital where his mother was ill.
- Music director Shaan, a regular Vineeth Sreenivasan collaborator, made his acting debut in the film, having earlier declined a brief role in Vineeth's Thira (2013); he accepted this one because of Vineeth's confidence in him.
