Plot summary
Calvin Coolidge High School gives Sylvia Barrett her first teaching post, English, right out of graduate school. Her classroom has a broken window and two broken chairs, and the students who fill it are disruptive and undisciplined. Alice Blake, who has a crush on the English teacher Paul Barringer, is assigned to Sylvia's class. Joe Ferone is intelligent and on court-mandated probation. The lessons fail to hold the room, and Mr. McHabe, the vice-principal, wants Sylvia's daily attendance records filed with the rest of the paperwork. Linda, a student, comes to class late after physical abuse by her father, and Sylvia asks the school guidance counselor about her students' permanent record cards.
