Plot summary

After solving a case involving the serial killer Edmund Cutler, San Francisco officer Jessica Shepard is transferred to homicide and made an inspector. Commissioner John Mills, the former partner of her late father and her foster father, is her proud mentor. Her first case with her new partner, Mike Delmarco, is the murder of a man she had once slept with, a fact she admits to the department. Days later a second man from the same part of her life is found dead, and the police keep Shepard on the investigation at Mills' insistence. Shepard drinks heavily and carries the history of her father, who killed her mother's lovers, then her mother, then himself.
