Plot summary
Bitcoin starts with a white paper Satoshi Nakamoto published during the 2008 financial crisis, and the film follows the currency from obscurity to the Silk Road marketplace on the darknet. It charts government resistance to a decentralized currency, taking in the extradition fight of hacktivist Lauri Love and the case of Aaron Swartz. Then come Ethereum, smart contracts and applications outside finance: microgrids for electrical transmission, identity platforms that fight identity theft, and official documents for stateless refugees. Musicians such as Imogen Heap look to micropayments as a way for fans to support artists directly. Banks and pundits condemn volatile cryptocurrencies while UNICEF uses blockchain to help refugee children. Supporters argue it can narrow income gaps and ease the refugee crisis and world hunger.
