Plot summary
Bree Osbourne, who has been cleared for male-to-female reassignment surgery, is a week from the operation when her therapist, Margaret, refuses to approve it until Bree deals with a part of her past she has left behind. A call comes from Toby Wilkins, seventeen, jailed in New York and looking for the man he believes is his biological father. Bree never knew she had a son. She flies east and bails him out, posing as a Christian social worker and hiding her own identity. Toby has survived by hustling and petty crime and wants to reach Los Angeles to act in porn films. Bree offers to drive him west, planning to leave him with his stepfather in Kentucky on the way.

- For Bree's nude bathtub scene, Felicity Huffman said there were supposed to be far more bubbles, but the low-budget production ran out of time to get it right, using dish detergent as a substitute, leaving her more exposed on camera than planned.
