Plot summary
Ross McElwee, forty years old, films the world around him, himself included. When he marries his filmmaking partner, Marilyn Levine, a marriage his family had given up expecting, he keeps the camera running, recording this new phase of his life and narrating his thoughts about life, death, love, family and babies. The film's title comes from a phrase in the Bible, time indefinite, spoken by a visiting Jehovah's Witness while McElwee is adjusting his exposure to catch the light on the man's face. He hears it about thirty seconds later and takes it to describe how death arrives without warning.

- The film's title came from a Bible passage a visiting Jehovah's Witness mentioned while McElwee was filming him. Distracted by adjusting exposure to catch light on the man's face, McElwee heard the phrase about 30 seconds late and took it to mean death's unpredictable imminence.
