Plot summary

Halloween Town is a world of monsters and supernatural beings tied to the holiday it is named for. Jack Skellington leads them as the Pumpkin King, and he has grown weary of the same routine. In the woods he comes upon trees whose doors open onto other holiday worlds, and the one he steps through leads to Christmas Town, which fascinates him. Jack describes his discovery to the town's residents, who cannot make sense of the holiday. He declares that the town will handle Christmas this year and gives the residents Christmas tasks, among them carols and a sleigh drawn by skeletal reindeer. Sally, a rag-doll creation of the scientist Doctor Finkelstein, warns him against the plan.

  • Screenwriter Caroline Thompson clashed with Tim Burton during production, and Burton destroyed the editing machine after she said she wanted to redraft the film's ending.
  • Disney stalled development of Tim Burton's poem because its tone seemed "too weird", and the studio fired him in 1984; he went on to direct Beetlejuice (1988) and Batman (1989) for Warner Bros.
  • Vincent Price, Don Ameche and James Earl Jones were all considered to narrate the film's prologue, but all three proved difficult to cast, so the producers hired Ed Ivory instead.

  • Tim Burton hired his Beetlejuice collaborator Michael McDowell to adapt the poem, but their creative differences convinced Burton to turn it into a musical with songs by Danny Elfman.
  • The film's Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects was a first for an animated film, with no animated feature having been nominated in that category before.
  • Disney pulled the film from its main animation lineup and released it through the adult-oriented Touchstone Pictures banner, believing the Gothic film would be "too dark and scary for kids".
  • The El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood has shown the film in 4D every October through Halloween since 2010, and the reissues led to a reemergence of 3D films and advances in RealD Cinema.
