Plot summary

A Mafia don, Mr. Green, offers Gino, a Chicago shoe-shiner, a large sum to admit to a killing that another gangster carried out. Gino turns him down, and when the don seems about to order a hit, he agrees, with the fee to go toward a fishing boat once a three-year sentence is done. A confession is signed and his fingerprints are placed on the weapon. Jerry, a gangster at the bottom of the organization who has drawn trouble for disregarding orders, is told to watch him before the court confession. To fill Gino's last free days, Jerry takes him to a resort and casino at Lake Tahoe, where Gino is mistaken for a powerful mafioso and the two are treated as VIPs.
