Plot summary

After the Mexican-American War ends and California moves toward statehood, the gunslinger Hatfield Carnes kills a Mexican man in 1848. Jim Ellison, a former United States marine serving as sheriff without a badge or a gun, arrests him for murder. Ellison holds his post from Don Roberto de la Madrid, a businessman and political figure in the area, and wants to win over de la Madrid's daughter, Elena. Judge Millard Isham reaches town with Deputy Marshal Ben Stroud to conduct the proceedings, and Lee Hearn, a wanted man with legal troubles of his own, offers to serve as a deputy. In the new Mexican Cession territory, the Hispanic residents wait to learn whether American justice will convict Carnes.
