Plot summary
Gelsomina is the eldest of four daughters on a honey farm in the Tuscan countryside. She minds her younger sisters, hauls the hives and organizes the honey extraction, while her father, Wolfgang, keeps the household closed off from the outside world. Around them pesticides burn up the countryside and the family struggles to make ends meet. New European rules on farm produce require a honey lab with washable walls and defined work spaces, so Wolfgang takes in Martin, a silent boy from a youth rehabilitation exchange program, to help with the honey production. Then a television contest arrives from the city, hunting for Italy's most traditional family, with a cash prize and a cruise. Wolfgang will not consider it, but Gelsomina applies on the family's behalf without telling him.
