Plot summary
Matt Farrell is a diver, and he is in the water when Neva Gordon and Steinman seize him and carry him off to an island. Neva's father, Dr. Gordon, works there, attempting to build what he calls a super race by joining people and animals together. The island holds the results of that work: Ayesa the Panther Woman, Kuzma the Antelope Man, Darmo the Bat Man, Primo the Ape Man and Lupa the Wolf Woman. Dr. Gordon intends to use Farrell in one of his coming experiments, and Farrell stays on the island against his will.

- Corman, Woolner and actor-producer Ashley had already worked together on Beast of the Yellow Night, The Big Doll House and The Woman Hunt when they came up with a modern-day version of the Wells classic over lunch. Ashley said the script was written and filming began one month after that lunch.
- Jan Merlin, who played one of the villains, said Ashley asked him to dye his head blonde to differentiate him from Ashley, who had brown hair.
- Director Romero had previously produced Terror Is a Man in 1959, closely based on H. G. Wells' The Island of Doctor Moreau, and returned to the same subject matter with The Twilight People, though neither film acknowledged its source material.
