Plot summary
During the Second World War, Alice runs a farm in the English countryside; her husband is a prisoner of the Japanese. She discovers Barton, a young man, in the fields, and he stays to work on the farm. Friendship turns to love between them. Rather than return to the army, Barton goes absent, and Alice gives him shelter in exchange for his help around the place. Military police start looking for him, so Alice dresses him as a woman and presents him as her sister; he goes by the name Cathy. A sergeant from a nearby post is drawn to Cathy, and when Christmas comes he invites Alice and her sister to a party. Alice says no; Barton wants to go.
