Plot summary
Victorian London. Captain Macheath is a wanted criminal, and his friendship with 'Tiger' Brown, a police officer he served with in the British Army, keeps him safe. Macheath marries Polly, the daughter of Peachum, the king of London's beggars. The marriage is secret. When Peachum and his wife, Celia, learn of it, they set out to have Macheath hanged. Peachum tells Brown, the police chief, that Macheath must be arrested and hanged; otherwise the beggars of Soho will disrupt the coronation the city is preparing for.
