Plot summary
Police in New York open a case when a woman is found dead in a park, her face destroyed by a shotgun. No name comes with the body. A tattoo on her arm is the single clue to who she was. Lieutenant Corrigan and rookie detective Tobin lead the inquiry. Corrigan doubts the value of Tobin's book learning, yet it proves useful. Tobin brings blades of grass from the car that carried the corpse to Dr. Mary Mahan, a botanist. She identifies the plant they came from, a species not normally found in New York.

- Before The Tattooed Stranger, producer Jay Bonafield and director Edward J. Montagne made a two-reel documentary short for RKO Pathe in 1948 called Crime Lab, using roughly the same police-procedural plot as a "sketch" for the feature.
- The Tattooed Stranger was shot on many New York locations that no longer exist, among them elevated railroads, the Bowery when it was a derelict district, and the dockside sections near the lower Manhattan bridges.
- The Tattooed Stranger was John Miles's final film appearance, and it was one of the first film roles for Jack Lord, later the star of Hawaii Five-O.
