Plot summary
After his girlfriend Erica Albright ends things with him, Mark Zuckerberg writes a bitter blog post about her and hacks Harvard's house face books to create Facemash, a site where students rate female classmates. The traffic cripples part of the university network, and he lands on academic probation. Twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss and their partner Divya Narendra ask him to build Harvard Connection, a dating site open only to Harvard students. He works instead on TheFacebook, bankrolled with $1,000 from his friend Eduardo Saverin, and it spreads across Ivy League campuses. The twins take their complaint to Harvard President Larry Summers, who is dismissive.

- The production could not film at the real Harvard, which has refused most on-campus filming requests ever since the 1970 film Love Story damaged trees on its grounds; The Social Network instead used Wheelock College and Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus as stand-ins.
- The Social Network became only the third film in history, after Schindler's List and L.A. Confidential, to sweep the "Big Four" critics' Best Picture awards from the National Board of Review, National Society of Film Critics, New York Film Critics Circle, and Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
- Armie Hammer, who portrayed the Winklevoss twins, acted alongside body double Josh Pence while his scenes were filmed, and Hammer's face was later digitally grafted onto Pence's face during post-production, while other scenes used split-screen photography.
- The opening scene of the film, in which Zuckerberg is with his girlfriend, needed 99 takes before it was finished.
