Plot summary
Peyara's uncle takes money to marry her to Aynal Munshi, a man much older than she is. Only after the wedding does she learn what her husband does for a living: he makes coffins, and carpenters work in his workshop. She cannot bear the smell of his sweat and pushes him away when he comes close. Munshi, aroused and then enraged by the rejection, forces himself on her. He does it again and again, and the repeated assaults leave Peyara close to madness. She begins to think about revenge. At the coffin factory, a new carpenter has been taken on. He is Hashem, a man Peyara once loved.
