Plot summary
In 1948 a wildfire burned through North Point, a wooded part of Colorado's Keen Wild national forest, killing most of a community of gypsies who lived secluded in a cave. Only a boy survived, disfigured by burns. In 1980 the campers Frank and Mary Sylvester, an older couple, are murdered with an axe one night in North Point. Weeks later, three couples from California set out on a hiking trip: Nancy and Joel, Bobbie and Skip, and Greg and Gail. The women pick up their nature permits and chat with Mark O'Brien, a forest ranger, who mentions that hardly anyone goes that far in. His superior, head ranger Lester Tile, has had a police call about the missing Sylvesters, and he describes a burned gypsy boy he once saw walking in the woods after the fire.

- An unknown director shot extra footage in the summer of 1981 for The Prey's international VHS editions, with an unknown actor dubbing over Steve Bond to blend it in. The scene was added at the insistence of Essex Productions executive Joseph Steinman, who wanted more nudity in the film.
- Director Edwin Brown said budgetary restrictions and running out of film stock left sequences of The Prey unshot, including one in which the forest ranger Mark joins the campers at their campfire.
- Roughly 70 percent of the nature footage in The Prey was stock footage, and director Edwin Brown conceded that some of the animal shots were inserted to increase the running time.
- The Dutch actor Carel Struycken was cast as The Prey's Monster because of his size: he stood 7 feet tall.
- The Prey was the last Jackie Coogan film released in his lifetime. The former child star of Charlie Chaplin's The Kid and Uncle Fester on The Addams Family died of cardiac arrest on March 1, 1984, at 69.
- The Prey was the first non-pornographic feature for director Edwin Scott Brown and his wife, producer Summer Brown, who had previously worked making adult films.
- Director Edwin Brown wanted to shoot The Prey in Colorado, where it is set, but could not afford it; the filmmakers scouted Big Bear before settling on Idyllwild, California, which was less populated and closer to Los Angeles.
