Plot summary
In a steel factory town, Chen Guilin earns what he can as an accordionist, playing the street with his small band between gigs. His adolescent daughter Xiao Yuan loves the piano and practices on the one at her music school. His wife Xiao Ju had left him for another man and now returns with money her boyfriend made selling fake medicine, wanting a divorce and custody of Yuan. Guilin is glad to end the marriage, since he is dating Shu Xian, the band's singer, but he will not give up his daughter. Asked what she wants, Yuan says she will live wherever there is a piano to play. With none to buy, Guilin tries one scheme after another, then, seeing the inside of a piano, believes he can build one with his friends.
