Plot summary
Slavoj Žižek, a Slovenian philosopher and psychoanalyst, takes ideology as his subject and popular cinema as his evidence. He moves through a long list of films, among them Triumph of the Will, The Eternal Jew, Brief Encounter, The Searchers, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Zabriskie Point, Jaws, Taxi Driver, Full Metal Jacket, They Live, Titanic and The Dark Knight, to set out how their narratives uphold the ethics and political ideas that prevail. Psychoanalysis is the tool he brings to the argument. News footage of the September 11 attacks, the 2011 Norway attacks and the 2011 England riots, a Rammstein concert, a Coca-Cola commercial and propaganda epics from Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union also feed into it.
