Plot summary
Darkly Noon is a young man named for a Bible passage, and he has spent his whole life inside an ultraconservative Christian cult. A violent incident ends the cult and kills his parents, and he stumbles, disoriented, into an Appalachian forest in North Carolina. Jude, an undertaker's assistant, and his friend Callie find him and take him to Callie's house, where she nurses him back to health. Darkly is torn between the beliefs he was raised with and his attraction to Callie. The tension grows when Callie's mute lover Clay, a coffin maker, returns after days away, and Clay's mother, Roxy, resents Callie for the relationship.

- Philip Ridley came up with the idea for the film while directing The Reflecting Skin, when the drive to and from set passed a fenced-off compound that belonged to a cult. He made up stories to amuse passengers on the two-hour drive about a man born in one of those cults who had never seen the outside world.
- Like Ridley's previous film The Reflecting Skin, it developed a cult following, and in 2014 it made the top 10 in The Daily Telegraph's list of the 50 most underrated films of all time.
