Plot summary

In the north country, the widow Halla hires a laborer who gives his name as Kári, and she becomes infatuated with him. Björn, the local bailiff, is her late husband's brother and wants to marry her, and he grows jealous of the newcomer. A man tells Björn that Kári is really Eyvind, an escaped thief. Kári denies it and beats Björn in a wrestling match to prove his sincerity. When Halla proposes marriage, he tells her the truth: his family had no food, a wealthy priest would not help them, he stole the priest's sheep, was caught, and escaped from prison. Then the bailiff returns with men to arrest him, and the pair leave the farm for the cold highlands.
