Plot summary
Golden and Silver are sirens who come out of the water in 1980s Poland, where the rock band Figs n' Dates is playing music on a beach. The two sisters go with the musicians to the Warsaw nightclub where the band appears, and they begin performing there as strippers and backup singers. Golden kills a nightclub customer after a show one night and keeps thirsting for human blood. Silver falls in love with Mietek, the band's bassist, who sees her as a fish rather than a woman. The two sisters dream of swimming on to a new life in America.

- Director Agnieszka Smoczyńska drew her mermaids from 14th–16th century tales that described them as the sisters of dragons, making them part monstrous, and invented their need to feed on human hearts and their habit of attacking victims' larynxes.
- Agnieszka Smoczyńska called the film a coming-of-age story echoing her own youth: her mother ran a nightclub where she had her first shot of vodka, first cigarette, first sexual disappointment and first important feeling for a boy.
- Screenwriter Robert Bolesto based the story on two friends of his who frequented nightclubs in the 1980s, an idea that enthused director Agnieszka Smoczyńska and resonated with her own childhood.
