Plot summary
In her cottage the witch shows her visitor a set of spells. An ancient kingdom was ruled by a beloved king with four sons, each gifted in his own way. The youngest was wise, the next compassionate, the second just, and the eldest strong. When the king died one autumn, he divided the rule among all four equally, trusting their unity to let the kingdom prosper. The eldest son, greedy and feeling disgraced, rejected the division, named himself sole ruler and demanded his brothers' obedience. His words broke the family stone and turned to war, and the brothers fought one another to a standstill. Seeking to change his fate, the prince came upon a menhir ring in the woods, where will-o'-the-wisps led him to a dark loch and a cottage far from the shore.
