Plot summary
In 1840, the samurai Shigero comes home to a house in the wooded hills near Kyoto and finds his wife, Otami, with another man, Masanori. He kills them and then himself. In the present day, American writer Ted Fletcher moves into that abandoned house with his wife, Laura, and their twelve-year-old daughter, Amy. Haunting and possession begin. Three dead people trouble each of the Fletchers, and the incidents grow more frequent and more serious. A Zen monk comes to Ted, recounts the killings, and tells him to leave the house.
