Plot summary

Kang Soo-ha is twenty-one when he takes his first teaching post, at a school in a mountain village in Gangwon Province, in 1962. He has come from Seoul. Among his older pupils is Yun Hong-yeon, seventeen, who helps her widowed mother at home by minding her baby brother. She develops a crush on the new teacher and looks for ways to catch his eye, but her efforts draw no notice from him. Kang Soo-ha's attention lies with Yang Eun-hee, another teacher at the school and, like him, newly arrived. Yun Hong-yeon's age, and her place as one of his pupils, stand between them.
