The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand reaches Josef Švejk through his landlady, Müllerová, and he carries the news to the pub. A secret police agent is there, spying on people who speak about political subjects, and Švejk talks with him and is arrested for treason. The authorities release him after deciding that he is officially stupid. Good-natured and garrulous, Švejk suffers from rheumatism and still decides to enlist in the army when the First World War breaks out, becoming a loyal Czech soldier in Austria's forces.
