Plot summary
At Roxton Fashions, the New York dress house Walter Mitchell owns, the shop runs on an arrangement with Artie Ravidge, a hood who keeps the union out and the employees in line. The company pays protection money to Ravidge and his men. Fred Kenner, Walter's partner, sides with the union and tells Walter to cut his ties with the enforcers. Walter's son Alan, a Korean War veteran back from the fighting, comes into the company. On the factory floor, organizer Tulio Renata works to bring the union into the shop, and his wife Theresa Renata is caught up in the campaign.

- Columbia fired director Robert Aldrich while the film was being made because he refused to change its focus: studio head Harry Cohn wanted "boy meets girl in a dress factory" rather than the tough document Aldrich was shooting.
- Vincent Sherman, whom Columbia head Harry Cohn asked to finish the picture, said he re-shot about seventy percent of The Garment Jungle in roughly ten days and did not know what was going on.
- Aldrich had to use Columbia contract players Kerwin Mathews, Gia Scala, Robert Loggia and Valerie French, and said the presence of four newcomers could seriously overburden the director.
