Plot summary
Jan Letterman works as personal assistant to Laura Winters, a wealthy actress whose career is behind her. Jan hires Grant Murdoch, a pilot, to fly them from New York to Provincetown, Massachusetts, and a storm puts the plane down on a small island instead. There a marine biologist, Peter Bartell, lives in seclusion, and strange skeletons wash ashore, first human and then fish. The water around the island holds a glowing microbe that eats flesh. A beatnik, Omar, is shipwrecked on the shore and joins them, and when the plane drifts out to sea, the group is left on the island with the organisms.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Flesh Eaters (1964)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- George A. Romero began work in 1967 on a horror film provisionally called Night of the Flesh Eaters; to avoid confusion with The Flesh Eaters, distributor The Walter Reade Organization had the title changed to Night of the Living Dead.
- Writer-producer Arnold Drake said director Jack Curtis's wife won $72,000 on the television quiz show High Low, and that part of the money was used to finish The Flesh Eaters.
- While filming on location at Montauk, New York, a real hurricane destroyed the sets and equipment; production was delayed a year and the cost rose from $60,000 to $105,000.
- The Flesh Eaters contains violence much more graphic and extreme than many films of its time, making it one of the first ever gore films.
- The 1968 re-release of The Flesh Eaters removed a flashback sequence showing the original Nazi human experiments with the flesh eaters.
- Comic book writer Arnold Drake storyboarded The Flesh Eaters before filming, so every shot has the careful, formalized composition of a well-drawn comic strip.
