The Extra Man (2010) on Netflix

Plot summary

Louis Ives, a bookish young prep school teacher, loses his job after he is caught trying on a brassiere found in a campus office, and he leaves for New York City to become a writer. He answers an advertisement for a housemate and moves in with Henry Harrison, a greying, opinionated older man who holds that women should not be educated and who works as an extra man, a companion to wealthy older women at their social occasions. Henry says he takes no money for the role and calls himself an aristocrat. Louis finds work at an environmental journal, where he is drawn to his co-worker Mary Powell, and he meets Gershon, the eccentric neighbor. Henry agrees to instruct Louis in the extra man's world.
