Plot summary
Aurora Greenway raised her three grandchildren after her daughter Emma died. Her eldest grandson, Tommy, is serving time on a drug charge and harbors anger that his grandmother struggles to break through. Teddy, the younger, has a girlfriend and a son whom Aurora does not warm to. Melanie, the youngest, still lives with her and is giving thought to moving out. The housekeeper Rosie is Aurora's only true companion, and the General is a friend rather than a romance. Patsy, Emma's old friend, keeps a home in Houston, thinks of herself as Aurora's friend, and offers Melanie advice that Aurora resents. Rosie, courted by a neighbor named Arthur, tricks Aurora into seeing a counselor, Jerry, and Aurora tells him she is still looking for the love of her life.
