Plot summary
Ffynnon Garw, a village in South Wales, has long called its hill the first mountain inside Wales, and in 1917, with the local men away at war, two English cartographers arrive to check the claim. George Garrad and his junior, Reginald Anson, climb it on a Sunday, when the village is at church, and return with a firmer figure: 984 feet, 16 short of the 1000 that would make it a mountain. The villagers are crestfallen. Morgan the Goat, who keeps the inn, proposes raising the hill by 20 feet instead, and the Reverend Robert Jones lends a hand. Everyone digs earth and carries it up the slope, the cartographers' car is put out of action, and Betty is asked to keep the Englishmen occupied.
