Plot summary
In the 1980s, as China's reform and opening-up period begins and the economy takes off, Zang Jianhe leaves Shandong for Hong Kong. She is a single mother of two daughters. Circumstances force her to remain in the city, with no support and nothing to fall back on. To earn a living, she begins selling dumplings made in her family's traditional northern style. Employers deceive her, illness wears her down and hardship presses on her. Neighbors such as Ms. Hong, Mr. Hua and Sugar Water Bo stand by her.
