Plot summary
Nora Ruckstuhl lives in a small Swiss farming village with her husband Hans, their two sons and her father-in-law. It is 1971, and the upheavals of May 1968 have barely reached the countryside. Bored by housework, Nora wants to work again; Hans suggests another child. Her niece Hanna, forbidden to see an older boyfriend, persuades Nora to let her meet him one last time. In town Hanna runs off with him. There Nora encounters women demonstrating for women's suffrage and takes their flyers and a copy of The Feminine Mystique. At her women's club she says she supports the vote.
