Plot summary
When a young woman is killed and mutilated late one night in Los Angeles, television journalist Zoe Owens sets out to learn what happened. Detective Dave Mooney works the case, and the father of one of the victims joins the search. The attacks come at night, and the killer is known as the Mangler. Only De Renzy, a psychic, knows what the killer is and how it might be stopped.

- Tobe Hooper was hired by Film Ventures International to direct The Dark, but fell behind schedule, so the producers fired him and replaced him with John Cardos.
- John Cardos said the monster was first meant to be a large man kept locked in an attic by his parents, but halfway through production the producers made it electronic and able to shoot laser beams from its eyes.
