Plot summary
A busload of women on a tour of the Canadian countryside takes shelter at an isolated cottage when their bus breaks down. Seven of the eight are senior citizens; the youngest, Michelle, is twenty-seven and works as the tour guide. While they wait for rescue, each woman reflects on the life she has led and on growing old. The dialogue was largely improvised from a basic story outline, the women drawing on stories from their own experience. Montages of photographs from each woman's life appear, and among the travelers are Alice, a Mohawk elder, Catherine, a Roman Catholic nun, and Mary, a writer and painter.

- Rather than a tight script, the film was built from a basic outline with improvised dialogue: the eight women, all but one of them a senior citizen, told stories from their own lives.
- Cynthia Scott chose the seven women in 1988 after tryouts at the National Film Board of Canada in Montreal. Mary Meigs said some doubted they were "important enough" to be in a movie, and that she joined reluctantly because it interrupted "a summer of painting and work."
