Plot summary
At a chemical plant in Ravensback, workers Jim and Slim leave for the bar while pressure builds in a pipe. A yellow cloud of waste escapes and drifts low across the ground. A school bus is dropping children off along its route, and five of them are still aboard. When Sheriff Billy Hart comes upon the bus idling and empty beside a cemetery, he radios his deputy and the dispatcher and sets a roadblock on the highway with a few armed locals, fearing a kidnapping. He and John Freemont then find Janet Shore standing in the road, pale and dazed, and lift her into the car to take her home.
