Plot summary
The Cold War is at its height. Candy rides a city bus in Cape Town, aware that government agents are trailing her, and they have deduced correctly that she is a courier for Communist operatives. A pickpocket, Skip McCoy, lifts a wallet from her purse and leaves at the next stop, and she uses that moment to get clear of the men following her. When she looks in her purse, the wallet is gone. Its envelope holds state secrets on microfilm, and McCoy has it. Her employers, unhappy, tell her to recover the film. Government agents ask Cape Town authorities for help in tracing the pickpocket, and an underworld contact, Samantha "Sam" Williams, assists.
