Plot summary
Ben Holden is driving through the California desert with his girlfriend Nicky and his young daughter K. T. Around a sharp bend they find a wrecked car and what appears to be human remains, and Ben drives on to the nearest town, Hillsboro, to report it. The sheriff, Pete, attacks him, and the family flees, crashing when a girl appears in the road. They walk back to town and come upon the house of Ed and Mildred Meadows, where the couple lie dead. Doctor Duncan and the town's elderly residents gather in secret at the empty Barry house. Ben, Nicky and K. T. are given beds for the night at Pete's home, and the priest, Father Jack, reads late into the night about devil worship.
