Plot summary
An advertising executive in Los Angeles, Eddie Anderson is suicidal and sliding into a psychotic breakdown. His marriage to Florence has lost its passion for him and leaves her frustrated, and he has a mistress, Gwen, a research assistant at his agency. His father, Sam Arness, a former importer, is increasingly brain-damaged by arteriosclerosis and resents Eddie for going to college, for changing the name he was born with and for turning his back on the family business. Florence takes advice from the family lawyer, Arthur, and has a psychoanalyst, Dr. Leibman. Back at the agency, he offends an important tobacco client with a remark about cancer.
