Plot summary
Tonya Neely works as a cleaning lady and lives on Chicago's South Side, in a state-funded high-rise housing project that the architect Leo Waters designed years before. Her eldest daughter is a single mother, and Cammie, her youngest, has a scholarship at a prestigious school and stays with a well-off family that Tonya knows through her job. Tonya leads a community effort to have the project demolished and a better one built in its place. Leo is a successful architect who teaches the subject at a local university; his marriage to Julia is strained, his son Martin has dropped out of college, and his daughter Christina is in her mid-teens. At one of Leo's lectures, Tonya asks for his signature on her petition.
