Plot summary
Since her husband Paul died in a car crash two years ago, Christine Faber has been a widow. She has agreed to marry the lawyer Martin Abbott, though she still hears Paul's voice in the wind off the beach outside her house. On the beach one night she meets Alexis, a spiritualist who appears to know details of her life. Before she consults him, Martin's engagement ring and portrait are replaced by Paul's, and Paul's favorite piano piece wakes her. She begins visiting Alexis to try to reach Paul, and her younger sister Janet Burke and Martin grow uneasy as she leans further on him.
