Plot summary
In 1875 the Union Army still occupies Texas, and the governor turns to Leander McNelly to revive the Texas Rangers and police the Mexican border. The recruits are mostly young and untested, with a few war veterans among them. Lincoln Rogers Dunnison reaches a border town to meet his family just as John King Fisher and his gang ride in, killing townspeople and driving off cattle bound for auction. Lincoln falls in with George Durham, a cowhand whose outfit the same bandits hit, and the pair head to Brownsville to enlist. McNelly takes Lincoln in even though he is no Texan and shoots badly, and makes him his secretary because of his education.

The film is based on Leander H. McNelly and the Special Force of the Texas Rangers, but takes liberties with the record: McNelly is shown dying of tuberculosis right after the climax, when in real life he had retired from the Rangers the year before, and John King Fisher was not killed by the Rangers but came to an agreement with them.- John Milius said the Weinsteins were really arrogant, calling him up as if he should feel privileged to come back and ruin his own work; he told Bob Weinstein he was lucky to have the script the way it was.
